Countryside
Archaeological remains that lie in the countryside are often affected by land-use change that lies outside the planning control scheme. The Trust liaises closely with relevant bodies: Cadw; Natural Resources Wales; to both monitor change and impact and also to advise on remedial schemes and works. Some schemes provide an opportunity for landowners or tenants to gain funding to continue the guardianship of our rich and finite historical inheritance which many have undertaken for generations.
The Trust assists Cadw and Natural Resources Wales in the management of the historic environment within landscapes both where such landscapes are given some protection because of their historical or archaeological significance as is the case with those included on the Register of Historic Landscapes, Parks and Gardens and those protected for multiple reasons such as the Brecon Beacons National Park or the Gower and Wye Valley Areas of outstanding Natural Beauty or because of they are Sites of Special Scientific Significance (SSSI).
Glastir
The Glastir scheme offers incentives to protect the wildlife and existing habitats, create new habitats, encourage more public access and protect the landscape including historical and archaeological features. It is jointly funded by the Rural Development Plan for Wales and the European Union, offers farmers payment for the careful management of their land. Farmers and owners of woodlands are encouraged to manage their land in a more environmentally friendly way.
Incentives to protect the wildlife and existing habitats, create new habitats, encourage more public access and protect the landscape including historical/archaeological feature are offered through the scheme. With support from Cadw and the Rural Payments Division of the Welsh Office the Trust has ensured that key data is readily available through the Historic Environment Record
