Historic Background

The historic landscape area of Graig Goch and Heol Newydd is an area of mixed agricultural enclosure and woodland, part of the post-medieval estate of Margam; large tracts of Margam estate land of similar character exist to the southeast beyond the boundaries of the historic landscape. The HLCA encompasses the post-medieval farmsteads/settlements of Graig Goch and Heol Newydd, the latter a building shown on an estate map of 1814, and further detailed on the first edition.

Historic Landscape Characteristics

Graig Goch and Heol Newydd is characterised as an area of low-lying undulating agricultural landscape along the base of the wooded cliffs of Graig-Goch. Typically, the area comprises small evolved/irregular fields, which have in places partially reverting to broadleafed woodland and unmanaged scrub. The area is reminiscent of the landscape to the east around the former monastic grange site of Hafod Heulog. The area contains characteristic irregular hedged field boundaries and a loose dispersed settlement pattern of post-medieval farmsteads and cottages.
