The First World War - discover the legacy of the war in Wales

NEWYDDION

NEWS

All the Welsh Archaeological Trusts, grant aided by Cadw, are focusing on the First World War over the next few years to coincide with the centenary of the war. For the first year of the project GGAT carried out a scoping study of WWI sites within our area and in this and subsequent years we are looking at five themes:

  • The Sinews of War - Industry/manufacturing
  • The Call to Arms - The militarised landscape
  • Casualties of War - Hospitals and welfare facilities
  • Defence of the Realm - Coastal defences and port facilities
  • Their Names Liveth for Evermore - Commemoration and remembrance

This years focus is The Call to Arms and the project will be looking at two areas: possible practice trenches at St Dials Farm, Nr Monmouth and Porthcawl, and its role in the formation of the Welsh Army Corps.
