Urban Waterfronts in Southeast Wales
Summary
The historic ports and harbours of south Wales have played an important role in the history of the region; however their exact nature and extent are not well understood. There is a significant potential for the survival of archaeological remains at these sites, which are increasingly under threat from waterfront developments. A detailed assessment of these ports and harbours was funded by Cadw, so that our understanding of the potential of the maritime archaeological remains is enhanced and informed decisions regarding the future conservation of this resource can be made.
Year 1 of this project studied the historic ports of Chepstow, Newport, Cardiff and Swansea.
